Having established the Medici bank, Cosimo de’ Medici (1415-1464) was also an enlightened artistic patron.

Motivated by human ingenuity and his desire to give back to the people of Florence, Cosimo commissioned works from many great artists including the eccentric and brilliant architect Filippo Brunelleschi.

This premium Pinot Nero was selected from the finest vines of the estate and recognises Cosimo’s contribution to completion of the magnificent dome of the Florence Duomo—a benefaction that earned him the honorific titleof Pater Patriae.

Harvest and Fermentation
All grapes are hand harvested and carefully selected at our sorting tables. Fermentation is completely natural, entrusted only to indigenous yeast that draws out the characteristics of the vintage terroir. The wine ferments for 18-25 days in oak vats under a controlled temperature.
Ageing
After fermentation, the wine rests for 12 months in new French oak barriques, then settles for a further 3-6 months in cement vats for natural purification, allowing us to bottle without filtration. It finally ages in the bottle for further 12-24 months. Pater Patriae can age for up to 20 years with ever enhancing complexity.
