The roots of the Medici date back to the 8th century when legend tells that, while riding through the Mugello valley, Averardo, one of Charlemagne’s bravest knights, encountered a giant terrorising the district. Averardo slayed the giant in
a heroic battle but his shield became damaged in the fight – dented in six places by the spiked ball of his opponent’s mace.

This Pinot Nero honours the mythical knight whose tale inspired the palle on the Medici coat of arms and heralded their arrival into Mugello, the location of Tenuta Cafaggiolo.

Harvest and Fermentation
All our grapes are hand harvested and carefully selected at our sorting tables. The wine ferments for 18-25 days in French oak open vats under a controlled temperature.
Ageing
After fermentation, the wine is left in third to fourth pass French oak barriques for the following 12 months. It is then moved to cement vats where it undergoes a process of natural purification, avoiding the need for filtration. Finally, the wine is bottled and allowed to rest for another 6 months, resulting in a refreshing and easy-drinking Pinot Nero.
