It was Giovanni di Bicci (1360-1429) that established the rich foundations of the Medici dynasty. Hedging against turbulent financial markets, di Bicci invested banking profits into farmland at Cafaggiolo where, in 1451, his eldest son, Cosimo, commissioned Michelozzo to remodel the ancient castle into the family’s country seat.

For this Pinot Nero, in a contemporary reinterpretation of the gold florin coin, di Bicci’s huge contribution to the family’s good fortune is memorialised with his distinctive and striking profile.

Harvest and Fermentation
All the grapes are hand harvested and carefully selected at our sorting tables. The fermentation process is completely natural, entrusted only to indigenous yeast that draws out the characteristics of the vintage terroir. The wine ferments for 18-25 days in oak vats under a controlled temperature.
Ageing
After fermentation, the wine rests for 12 months in French oak barriques, half of which are new and the rest retained from the previous year. It settles for a further 3-6 months in cement vats for natural purification, which allows us to bottle without filtration. The wine finally ages in the bottle for a further 12-24 months.
