The roots of the Medici date back to the 8th century when legend tells that, while riding through the Mugello valley, Averardo, one of Charlemagne’s bravest knights, encountered a giant terrorising the district. Averardo slayed the giant in a heroic battle but his shield became damaged in the fight – dented in six places by the spiked ball of his opponent’s mace.

This Pinot Nero honours the mythical knight whose tale inspired the palle on the Medici coat of arms and heralded their arrival into Mugello, the location of Tenuta Cafaggiolo.

The last of the Medici, Anna Maria Luisa (1667-1716) created the Patto di Famiglia, which stipulated that Medicean treasures collected over three centuries of political ascendancy could not be sold or removed from Florence. On her marriage in 1691 to Johann Wilhelm, the Elector Palatine, Anna Maria Luisa gained her title, the Electress Palatine.

Buried with her Electress Palatine crown, Anna Maria Luisa is the ultimate bella figura – reason enough for this fine Chardonnay to honour her name.

It was Giovanni di Bicci (1360-1429) that established the rich foundations of the Medici dynasty. Hedging against turbulent financial markets, di Bicci invested banking profits into farmland at Cafaggiolo where, in 1451, his eldest son, Cosimo, commissioned Michelozzo to remodel the ancient castle into the family’s country seat.

For this Pinot Nero, in a contemporary reinterpretation of the gold florin coin, di Bicci’s huge contribution to the family’s good fortune is memorialised with his distinctive and striking profile.

Dating from 1470, La Nencia da Barberinois an early poetic work by Lorenzo de’ Medici. Composed at the Villa Medicea di Cafaggiolo—his favourite hunting retreat—Lorenzo personifies himself as the crude shepherd Vallèra who has fallen in love with the beautiful Nencia, a fictional peasant girl of the area.

As the love muse of Lorenzo, we dedicate our Rosato to La Nencia who is represented simply by the rosa to which she is compared in the fourth stanza of the poem.

Having established the Medici bank, Cosimo de’ Medici (1415-1464) was also an enlightened artistic patron.

Motivated by human ingenuity and his desire to give back to the people of Florence, Cosimo commissioned works from many great artists including the eccentric and brilliant architect Filippo Brunelleschi.

This premium Pinot Nero was selected from the finest vines of the estate and recognises Cosimo’s contribution to completion of the magnificent dome of the Florence Duomo—a benefaction that earned him the honorific titleof Pater Patriae.
